Women’s soccer advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, concluding the season with a 12-9-2 record and a second-consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. Field hockey also reached the NCAA Tournament, finishing the 2011 campaign with a 12-9 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Women’s volleyball finished the season with a 21-15 record, reached the Sweet Sixteen for the second consecutive season and notched its third-straight season with 20-plus wins.
Men’s cross country, with a combined team score of 538, secured a top-25 finish at the national championships for the 11th time in school history and sixth time under the direction of head coach Robert Gary.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
Stanford again leads the way with 382 points currently. Rounding out the top five are Florida State (351), North Carolina (329), UCLA (328), and Michigan (272). Penn State (264) is just behind Michigan in sixth, ranking Ohio State (206) third at the moment among Big Ten schools.
